Poquelin II
Poquelin II is a co-production comprising Dood Paard, Toneelhuis/Olympique Dramatique, NTGent, STAN and ARSENAAL/LAZARUS with an extensive cast: Kuno Bakker, Els Dottermans, Willy Thomas, Stijn Van Opstal, Jolente De Keersmaeker, Damiaan De Schrijver and Frank Vercruyssen join forces to tackle the oeuvre of Molière.
In 2004 STAN made Poquelin, a production based on a number of dramas by Molière, including ‘Mèdecin malgré lui’, ‘Sganarelle’ and ‘Le Malade Imaginaire’. The production toured extensively in a Dutch and French version. Molière said: ‘I want to occupy myself with man’s absurd character traits and in a witty, theatrical way, portray the shortcomings of this world.’ Reason enough to revisit his work in search of a new production.
Certain to be included are: ‘Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme’ (1670), in which Molière mocks the wealthy citizen who tries to imitate the manners and lifestyle of the nobility and ‘L’Avare’ (1668) a tragicomedy about avarice, lust for power, greed, generation conflict, truth and lies, replete with the absurd financial and moral deals we bombard each other with.
